Los Desechos doesn’t just play Cumbias—they raise the dead with "Cumbias Levantamuertos." Their music is for everyone: the tía and tío who know all the dance moves, los vecinos (the neighbors), the car cruising down East Austin bumping them, for you, and for everyone. They’re not just a band—they’re part of the cultural fabric of the community.
Los Desechos has shared the stage with Sonora Dinamita, Sonido Gallo Negro, El Combo Oscuro, Money Chicha, and more at SXSW, Viva Big Bend, Houston’s Cumbia Caravan, San Antonio’s Noche Cumbiambera, Cumbiadelica Fest, and is the resident house band for Hotel Vegas Cumbia Night.
Comprised of John Dell on guitar (El Combo Oscuro/El Tule/En Orbito/Harvest Band), David Dalton on keys (Continental Drift), Jacob Rivera on bass (El Tule/Beat Eternal), Eric Brown on drums (Los Kurados), Mateo Turner (El Tule) and Michael Penic on timbales (El Tule), Los Desechos—loosely meaning "The Outsiders"—formed in early 2024 with a clear mission: to blow up local dance-floors with feel-good original Cumbias that resonate with the soul, and make the body feel alive.
Their music is heavily influenced by the psychedelic, chicha, sonidero, and surf sounds, creating a unique mezcla that has already made waves in Austin's vibrant music scene and has quickly become a favorite among Austin’s thriving dance community.
“Our goal is to bring back the kind of Cumbias you heard on 70s radio as you approached the Laredo bridge or you hear while driving in West Texas along the border—the ones your neighbor who likes to party plays ‘till 3 AM. Downtown Monterrey, MX cantinas still come alive with the sound of juke box Cumbias. Those are the types of Cumbias we’re reviving".

“I hereby proclamate July 19th, 2025 as Official Austin Los Desechos Day” - Kirk Watson, Mayor, City of Austin
“Dive into trippy Seventies throwback surf cumbias, “to raise the dead,” from an Austin supergroup known and loved for leading the Hotel Vegas cumbia night” - Christina Garcia, Austin Chronicle
"When Miguelito starts seeing skeletons in Pixar’s 2017 Coco and then enters the Land of the Dead, where everything turns to the black neon of Día de los Muertos – that’s Los Desechos. An El Tule spinoff by way of their frontman John Dell and his local cumbia powerhouse El Combo Oscuro, the new sextet raises a Coco/Beetlejuice demographic on Cumbias Levantamuertos. Raising the dead with poking, stabbing, jangling chicha psych – surf guitars and bleating keys – Los Desechos’ full-length debut waxes street on instant taco anthem “Cinco de Pastor.” -Raoul Hernandez, Austin Chronicle
"Cumbias Levantamuertos” brings nostalgic vibe for a new generation of music lovers. In Spanish, the phrase “levanta muertos” is used to describe something so good it could raise the dead; from the first cup of coffee in the morning, to the first taste of home cooking after a long time away. The music in this release was crafted to be danced to and enjoyed with family, friends and long departed loved ones. -Juan Garcia, KUTX
This offshoot of beloved cumbia collective El Combo Oscuro formed last year and immediately started playing unofficial South by Southwest shows. Now performing as true fest-sponsored artists (albeit before this blurb’s publication; catch their free shows this week if you can), Los Desechos create, as they put it on socials, music for everyone: “the tía and tío who know all the dance moves, the neighbor whose speakers blast it across the block, the car cruising down East Austin bumping them, and you – ready to hit the dance floor.” –Carys Anderson, Austin Chronicle
